Jan Olbracht is a unique place on the map of Toruń gastronomy. This restaurant with a brewery is situated in the heart of the Old Town, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, on four storeys of a Gothic tenement house from the 14th Century.
The restaurant has functioned here for a dozen years or so. Having worked in the same form for years, it needed some changes and refurbishment. Our task was to redecorate the main Room on the ground floor, together with the bar and the brewhouse, the Royal Room on the first floor, as well as the conference and event space. It was crucial to preserve and highlight the original interior elements such as: the polychrome and the Gothic brick.
On the ground floor, we preserved the loges in the wooden niches, adding, however, new lighting, and comfortable upholstery, and painting the wooden elements universal black. The bar was completely redecorated. The rustic alcohol shelves were replaced with industrial, welded ones. In the top part, we hung original barrels, and the whole wall was cladded with hand-made hexagon tiles. The entrance wall was cleared from plaster, which allowed to reveal the beautiful Gothic brick, acting as the background for the copper vats.
Also the mezzanine room in front of the Royal Room entrance was metamorphosed.
The dark green loges, dimmed light and wooden panelling gave it a club-like, cosy feel.
The Royal Room is an impressive, tall space. The walls are partly covered with Gothic polychrome, to which it owes its unique character. One of the walls was painted navy blue and adorned with hand-painted pattern, taken from elements of the restaurant’s visual identity. To the right from the entrance, there is a tall bookcase, serving both as a piece of furniture and as a decoration. The interior is complemented by purple armchairs and wooden palace floor, matching the historical character of the place.
